It’s official: ‘Wednesday’, Tim Burton’s series based on the iconic Wednesday Addams of the Addams family, has been renewed for a second season! The series, which achieved high viewing figures in a short time, became one of the most talked about productions on social media. Most notably, actress Jenna Ortega's looks from the show have everyone wondering how to get the perfect goth prep look!.

The sensual dualism of Gothic Chic

Wednesday's monochrome wardrobe, created by costume designer Colleen Atwood, features gothic details such as iconic black dresses and wide white collars, but has been given a modern, prep edge with pieces such as bomber jackets, sweaters, striped blazers and tulle dresses. It's obvious that Wednesday doesn't like colour on the show. Despite the lack of colour, Atwood managed to create a wardrobe far from monotony for Wednesday, thanks to her clever pairings with black and white tones throughout the series. The rebellious and outcast main character is wonderfully blended with gothic romance, giving room for a great wardrobe in the series. Let's take a closer look at Wednesday's clothing style!

Gothic Fashion

In the early 2000s, gothic fashion was making its way into the mainstream, with Alexander McQueen being the first world-famous designer to bring the gothic aesthetics to the runway. Fashion critics described the designer's ‘Birds, Hunger and Shining’ collection as "the return of Victorian drama". Almost all of the collections were filled with black lace, puffy skirts and ruffled blouses – all the makings of a perfect gothic look. When accessorising, semi-precious stones are the go-to. Cool-coloured topaz, black opal, agate, jade, and other black-and-white coloured stones are the perfect addition to any goth chic look.

Wednesday Addams:  Style In Focus

Unforgettable characters in the history of cinema and television always inspire the world of fashion – and Wednesday Addams is no exception. Inspired by the character in 2019, designer Miuccia Prada took inspiration from the daughter of the Addams’ family. Accompanied by the Addams Family's theme song, Prada’s 2019 autumn-winter fashion show featured models styled in Wednesday’s trademark plaits and that dark romance we all associate with her character. Tim Burton’s Wednesday Addams is no exception to this iconic inspiration, with Ortega’s character becoming a gothic style icon who is still being talked about all over social media.

You would assume Wedneday’s iconic outfits to be those worn outside Nevermore Academy. But, with her unique black and grey uniform averting from the blue and black school colours, Burton’s main character makes her fashion mark in every scene. Complementing her uniform with thick loafers in the series, Addams looks like she’s walking a fashion show, not the hallways of Nevermore.  This is to be expected however, when you realise Colleen Atwood chose pieces from the likes of Miu Miu, Prada and of course Alaïa providing THE dress from the scene we all love. Outside of school, Jenna Ortega’s character swaps the striped blazer and skirt for biker shorts, A-cut dresses, platform-soled sneakers and wide blouses.  Although the colour palette used by Wednesday remains largely the same, the combinations are accompanied by extra black and white striped pieces, check patterned jackets, vests and shirts.
